Staff at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy teach in health policy and public health coursework programs at both the University of Sydney and The Australian National University. Further information about these programs is available below.

University of Sydney

The University of Sydney’s Graduate Program in Health Policy offers a critical perspective on how our health care system operates. It emphasises the importance of power and value choices, focusing on the interaction of governments with the private and community sectors in shaping policy.

The program can be studied as a Graduate Certificate in Health Policy, a Graduate Diploma in Health Policy, or a Master of Health Policy.

The health policy curriculum has been designed especially to suit:

  • Those people who are currently working in policy and wish to extend their knowledge and skills in the health sector;
  • Health care practitioners who wish to develop policy skills for current or future work;
  • Recent graduates with science, medical science or social science degrees who wish to pursue a career in health policy;
  • Managers working in health related sectors - public and private; and
  • Those with existing technical backgrounds, including clinical managers, seeking higher levels of knowledge of the health policy process.

Financial Support

All new local enrolments in the Master of Health Policy are able to apply for financial support in the form of a Commonwealth Assisted Place or the Baxter Scholarship for Excellence in Health Policy.  Advice about how to apply for these support schemes will be available on this webpage at the end of 2010.

Professional Development Short Courses

Professional development short courses in health policy are offered throughout the year.  The short courses can:

  • increase your chances of promotion within your current workplace;
  • enable you to obtain the skills you need to transfer to a different position;
  • increase your competency and level of job satisfaction in your current position.

Australian National University

The ANU Master of Public Health program is a one year full time (or up to four years part time) vocational masters level degree by coursework designed for health professionals seeking a qualification to equip them for management, graduates seeking a qualification to equip them for public health practice and health administrators and policy workers seeking a qualification to assist their promotion.

The ANU Master of Public Health will equip students with the foundations of public health practice; provide them with an understanding of contemporary public health issues relevant to Australia and teach them practical techniques for analysing public health problems.The program will expose students to the ANU's strength in research and its ready access to the local and national health administration and policy scene.

The program will provide practical experience in public health through workplace related learning, development of a research project and elective study. The range of course material presented will ensure students gain an understanding of contemporary public health issues relevant to Australia.
