Academic and Student Visitors

The Menzies Centre for Health Policy invites academics and students from both Australia and overseas to apply to undertake research as a visitor to the Menzies Centre.  Potential visitors should have a strong interest in health policy and a research project that will complement the research strengths of Menzies Centre staff.

Please see below for information for visitors at both the University of Sydney and the Australian National University.

University of Sydney

All visitors are asked to either present a seminar during their stay or work toward the production of a report, journal paper or other document with researchers from the Menzies Centre.

Students and academics who wish to visit the Menzies Centre at the University of Sydney should forward their application to Emma Dupal.  Applications will be assessed on the feasibility of the proposed research and the capacity of the Menzies Centre to provide the environment for the research to take place.

Australian National University

The Menzies Centre for Health Policy at the Australian National University (ANU) is closely associated with the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute, and, in conjunction with the Institute, offers visiting fellowships for people within Australia and overseas.

The Menzies Centre for Health Policy at ANU carries out research principally in the area of long-term illness.  The Serious and Continuing Policy and Practice Study (SCIPPS) is the key research project conducted by both ANU and University of Sydney research teams.   A number of extension projects have been generated from the first phase of SCIPPS research and may be of interest to visitors and/or research students:

  • The 45 and up Data Linkage Study examines the use of the Chronic Disease Management Medicare Items for which GPs can claim a payment. These payments were intended to promote coordinated and integrated care for people with chronic illness. The impact of the use of these activities has not been evaluated previously.

  • The Socio-Economic Costs of Chronic Illness Survey explores the costs of illness, and the impact of illness on workforce participation, and on the need for assistance with everyday tasks.

  • The Duplication of Pathology Testing study looks at unnecessary duplication of testing, following the Commonwealth Fund Report (2006) that found more than 12% of tests were seen by patients as unnecessary. The study has completed a small qualitative study of patient experience, and will continue

In addition, the Menzies Centre for Health Policy at ANU has commenced a policy study that will examine the implementation of specific chronic illness policy in a number of Australian states.  Models to create a ‘best fit-best practice’ approach to developing and implementing policy in the Australian context will also be designed.  This study is funded by a grant from the Ian Potter Foundation.
