Methods (The Vision Hearing Project)
  • Establish an integrated service model for older people with DSI at selected Vision Australia low vision clinics, to facilitate earlier detection and appropriate referral of those with DSI.
  • Recruit clients for screening aged 65+ years
  • Assess impacts of sensory loss in terms of General health, quality of life (SF-36), Hearing Handicap and cognition (MMSE)
  • Follow-up participants within 12 months to review actions taken post-screening, factors that promoted or inhibited attendance at hearing services, hearing service outcomes achieved (e.g., levels of hearing aid uptake, satisfaction with aids if used (IOI-HA), positive benefits to clients (e.g., any changes in hearing handicap or quality of life.

Through this study we hope to increase awareness of dual sensory impairment among older people themselves as well as health professionals in primary care and rehabilitation; improve access to service systems; and encourage appropriate use of aids and assistive technologies.
