Maria Gomez, Research and Project Officer, The Diabetes Unit

Maria is a full time Research and Project Officer at The Diabetes Unit and works across a number of projects related to her main research interests which include primary prevention and the evidence base for intervening in chronic diseases.
Major projects Maria has worked on in this role include a national costing study of type 1 diabetes known as DiabCo$t Type 1, a literature review of diabetes prevention in culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and establishing a developing-country chronic disease knowledge network. The majority of her time is currently devoted to her role as research officer for the development of an evidence-based NHMRC guideline on the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes.
Maria initially joined The Diabetes Unit in August 2005 as Executive Assistant and Program Manager. After completing her Master of Public Health at The University of Sydney in 2005 Maria moved from her administrative role to occupy a technical public health role. Prior to this she had over 10 years of administrative experience at The University of Sydney which included working as Executive Assistant and Research Assistant to Professor Stephen Leeder during his term as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. More recently, Maria was employed as Assistant to Professor Judy Black in her capacity as Chair of the Research Committee, NHMRC.
